The chemical that I’m researching is biphenyl. Biphenyls can be found in things such as crop protection and plastics. As you can see this is used in things that we use or have everyday. Such as if you are a farmer or you just may like growing crops and you need something to protect your crops from weeds or maybe something else, so you use crop protection, which is why biphenyl is useful. Also it’s useful to us in America because we keep most of our food in plastic rap and or plastic containers.
If you’re a worker working where there are a lot of fumes while your working there’s a chance your breathing in biphenyl. As to how long you work there, there is different affects that biphenyl will have on you. If you work there for only a short period and breathing some of it could cause things like vomiting, irritation, and bronchitis. But if you breathe some of biphenyl in and your exposed to it you have the possibility of causing damage to your liver and nervous system. Biphenyl can also cause skin damage such as acne and rashes. There are other ways you can still get biphenyl in your body is not only if you work in a factory of some sort. You can also get it in you if you live by a factory, or a waste dump. Biphenyl can inter your body like some chemicals do, through inhaling it or through digesting it.
There are many ways biphenyl can enter the environment. It can be in the air, water, and soil. It is usually entered by smog from factories and by waist that contains biphenyl. Biphenyl doesn’t break down well into the environment, which means it floats in the air for a
long time. When they travel they can travel a long distance from where they once came and they then can fall into water and other organic particles.
If biphenyls were banned then we wouldn’t have a lot of important products that we use today. If this were banned we wouldn’t have a main product that we as Americans probably use everyday. If biphenyl were to be banned we would have no plastic. People use plastic for a lot of different things. We use it to wrap things up in so things won’t move around and get damaged. We mostly use plastic for our food. We put food in plastic bags and we put them on plastic plates. What biphenyl does with the plastic is, it prevents the plastic from melting quickly and be destroyed. Without plastic we can use things like glass to eat our food on, but the problem with glass is it breaks easily. With plastic you can bend it, but you can’t break it it’s a strong material that can stand pressure. We can carry things in paper bags, but the problem with that is paper bags rips easily. Plastic can with hold a lot and can stretch out so more things can fit in it, but paper bags can’t do that. So there are other alternatives to plastic, which has biphenyl in it but they aren’t as good as it. With more things being destroyed more money will be spent getting more of the same products. With plastic you can have it for a long time because it can with stand a lot. Plastic is a world wide product that every country uses, so it is beneficial to them and us in America.
